1. The Birth of the KONA Line (2017)

The Hyundai KONA name first appeared in 2017, as part of Hyundai’s effort to strengthen its SUV lineup for a younger and more adventurous generation. Named after the Kona district on the Big Island of Hawaii, the model embodied energy, freedom, and exploration. With its bold design and compact SUV form, the KONA quickly became one of Hyundai’s global bestsellers.

2. Transition to Electrification (2018–2019)

Following the success of the gasoline-powered KONA, Hyundai introduced the KONA Electric in 2018 — one of the world’s first fully electric subcompact SUVs. Soon after, in 2019, the company unveiled the KONA Hybrid, bridging the gap between traditional combustion and full-electric vehicles.

3. Technology and Efficiency (2019–2021)

The KONA Hybrid combined a 1.6-liter GDI petrol engine with an electric motor, producing a total of 141 horsepower. Its 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) offered a smooth and engaging drive, while its hybrid powertrain delivered excellent fuel efficiency. Hyundai positioned it as the perfect urban SUV — efficient, stylish, and eco-friendly.

4. Design Evolution and Recognition (2021–2023)

In 2021, Hyundai launched a refreshed version of the KONA Hybrid, featuring a sleeker exterior, redesigned LED lighting, and a more refined interior. It also introduced advanced safety and connectivity systems, such as SmartSense driver assistance and a 10.25-inch digital cluster. The model received high praise across Europe and Asia for combining eco-friendly technology with modern lifestyle design.

5. Toward a Sustainable Future (2023–Present)

Today, the KONA Hybrid continues to evolve as part of Hyundai’s “Smart Mobility for a Sustainable Future” strategy. The second-generation KONA, introduced in 2023, offers a larger body, improved hybrid system, and futuristic styling inspired by Hyundai’s IONIQ electric models.
