  • 1986: The Hyundai Excel was introduced in the U.S. market, becoming an instant success with over 160,000 units sold in its first year.

  • 1990s: Hyundai developed popular global models such as the Elantra, Accent, and Sonata, strengthening its reputation worldwide.

  • 1998: Hyundai reorganized as Hyundai Motor Group, acquiring Kia Motors and creating South Korea’s largest automotive conglomerate.


3. Technological Innovation and Quality Focus (2000–2010)

  • In the early 2000s, Hyundai shifted focus toward quality improvement and brand image enhancement.

  • 2004: The Sonata NF was launched, gaining recognition for safety, comfort, and design.

  • 2016: The Genesis luxury brand was officially established as an independent marque, competing with Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Lexus.

  • 2018: Launch of the Kona Electric and the second-generation Nexo hydrogen SUV, expanding Hyundai’s electric and hydrogen portfolio.

  • During this decade, Hyundai also invested heavily in autonomous driving and smart mobility, partnering with Aptiv, Baidu, Uber, and others to develop intelligent mobility ecosystems.


5. Electrification and Smart Mobility Era (2021–Present)

  • 2021: Hyundai launched the Ioniq sub-brand dedicated to electric vehicles, debuting the Ioniq 5, built on the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform). The model was praised for its range, design, and advanced technology.

  • 2022: The company released the Ioniq 6, emphasizing aerodynamics and sustainability, and set an ambitious goal to sell 2 million EVs by 2030.

  • 2023: The Ioniq 7, a large all-electric SUV, was unveiled as a concept, signaling Hyundai’s commitment to premium EVs.

  • Hyundai continues to expand in areas such as hydrogen energy, autonomous driving, robotics, and urban air mobility (UAM), reflecting its transformation into a Smart Mobility Solutions Provider.
