As of September 2023, the retail penetration rate of domestic new energy vehicles has reached 53.3%. So, as the "seven giants" of major domestic traditional automakers, how did they perform in September? Let's take a look together.

  1. BYD (passenger cars)

September sales: 417,600

Sales from January to September were 2.749 million units.

In September, BYD's sales reached 419,400 units, up 45.91% year-on-year, the first time the company's monthly sales exceeded 400,000 units. By the end of September, BYD's passenger car sales totaled nearly 2.75 million units, and total sales are expected to exceed 3 million units by October. If this goal can be achieved, it will exceed last year's full-year sales.

According to the single-brand sales data in September, BYD's Dynasty series and Ocean series sold a total of 401,572 units. Among them, the Dynasty series exceeded 200,000 units for the first time, with the three major series of Qin, Song and Yuan contributing 75,785 units, 46,125 units and 45,618 units respectively; the Ocean series sold 194,099 units, and the Seagull, Seal and Song series sold 43,425 units, 58,258 units and 43,010 units respectively; Fangchengbao Automobile sold 5,422 units; Tengshi Automobile sold 10,299 units; and Yangwang Automobile sold 310 units.

In the international market, BYD's exports in September reached 33,012 units, a year-on-year increase of 17.7%. So far this year, the cumulative export volume has exceeded 280,000 units, which has played an important role in promoting BYD's sales performance.

  1. Geely

September sales: 308,000 units

Among the current domestic automakers, Chery Automobile is one of the few companies that still attaches importance to the fuel vehicle market while actively expanding the new energy vehicle market.

  1. Changan Automobile

Sales from January to September: 1.16 million units

  1. Great Wall Motors

Sales in September were 108,000 vehicles (including commercial vehicles).

Sales from January to September were 853,000 vehicles.

In terms of new energy vehicles, Great Wall Motors sold 30,129 units in September, and the cumulative sales for the whole year reached 211,492 units.

Despite the unsatisfactory sales in the domestic market, Great Wall Motors performed quite well in the international market. Data shows that Great Wall Motors' overseas sales in September reached 44,105 units, and the cumulative overseas sales in 2024 were 324,244 units.

  1. GAC Group

Sales in September: 75,000 units

Sales from January to September were 503,700 units.

In September, GAC Trumpchi and GAC Aion's new car sales were 34,700 and 40,300 units, respectively, down 6.75% and 21.78% from the same period last year. In the first nine months, the cumulative sales of the two were 277,000 and 226,700 units, down 6.41% and 35.4% year-on-year, respectively.

GAC Group has been hit by the "price war" and its sales have declined. It faces huge pressure in the future, especially the new energy vehicle sector that it was originally proud of, which has become an obstacle to development. At this stage, it seems that the difficulty of achieving a breakthrough by relying on new energy vehicles has increased.

  1. SAIC Passenger Vehicles

Sales in September: 65,500 units

Sales from January to September were 557,700 units.

Recently, SAIC Motor released its September production and sales report tonight. The data showed that the group's total sales volume was 313,260 vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 35.03%. Among them, SAIC Passenger Cars sold 54,366 vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 41.12%. Zhiji's sales volume was 6,263 vehicles, a significant year-on-year increase of 246.98%, while MG India's sales volume was 5,021 vehicles.

At present, SAIC Passenger Cars owns three major brands: Roewe, MG and Feifan. Roewe has launched the D series models that can use both fuel and electricity, while MG is mainly aimed at the international market, and the future development prospects of Feifan Automobile are relatively vague. At the same time, Zhiji Automobile, as a high-end brand, currently has four products on sale: Zhiji L7, Zhiji LS7, Zhiji LS6 and Zhiji L6.

Zhiji L6

In the sales express report, Zhiji Automobile is the only brand whose sales volume has not declined, which is closely related to the hot sales of Zhiji L6 models. The sales of other brands have generally declined.

In conclusion

In 2024, the domestic auto market will usher in further "reorganization". According to the current situation, the ranking of the seven major domestic brands remains relatively stable: BYD still occupies the first position, Geely and Chery are competing for the second and third thrones. Obviously, the competition in the domestic auto market will become more and more fierce. At present, overseas exports and new energy are still the main growth areas, and many domestic brands are also actively seeking transformation and re-strengthening. 2024 may become an important turning point. What will the domestic auto market look like this year? Let us wait and see!
