Let's recall that the British brand MG has been part of SAIC since 2005. The MG 4 electric hatchback debuted in 2022 and brought explosive sales growth to the British brand in Europe: According to JATO Dynamics, in 2023, the MG 4 managed to become the best-selling electric car in its class here, surpassing the Volkswagen ID.3 with sales of 72,212 and 63,460 units, respectively.
In any case, Europe remains the main market for the MG 4; but in China, its sales are much worse, and now no one needs it at all: according to the China Automobile Association, a total of 36 units were sold in the first two months of 2025. (This is a 95% decrease compared to the same period last year). The problem is that by domestic standards, the MG 4 is outdated and too expensive - it starts at 139,800 yuan; for this price, there are many more profitable and interesting offers on the domestic market.
Overall, it's time for the MG 4 to change, and the new model is on the way, and it will most likely be much cheaper than its predecessor. The new MG 4 looks less aggressive than the first-generation hatchback, with all the corners softened, and the only remaining sporty element being the revised spoiler on the trunk door.
All the main dimensions have become larger: the new MG 4 has an overall length of 4395 mm, a width of 1842 mm, a height of 1551 mm, and a wheelbase of 2750 mm. For comparison, here are the dimensions of the first-generation hatchback: overall length - 4287 mm, width - 1836, height - 1516 mm, wheelbase - 2705 mm.
At present, the new MG 4 has only been announced with a 120 kW (163 hp) electric motor, while the "basic" version of the predecessor had a 125 kW (170 hp) electric motor and the top twin-motor XPower version produces 320 kW (435 hp). No details are available about the platform of the new MG 4, standard wheels are 16 or 17 inches (the predecessor model also offered 18-inch wheels), the curb weight is 1485 kg, and the top speed is limited to 160 km/h. It is not yet clear whether the new MG 4 will have a twin-engine sports version XPower.
