Overview of the Malaysian Automotive Market
The Malaysian automotive market shows that the dominance of local brands Perodua and Proton remains unchanged, while the market share of traditional Japanese brands is gradually shrinking.
Although the current market is still dominated by traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, the proportion of hybrid and pure electric models is steadily increasing.
Taking advantage of the opportunities brought by this transition period, Chinese automakers are actively deploying production bases and establishing partnerships in Malaysia to gradually penetrate and expand their market influence.
However, in the recent November, new car sales in Malaysia declined.
In November 2024, a total of 71,818 new cars were sold in the Malaysian automotive market, a year-on-year decrease of 8%.
In this regard, the chairman of the Malaysian Automotive Association analyzed that the decline in sales was mainly due to consumers' tendency to hold their money and wait and see before the end-of-year promotions.

Perodua, Proton and other local brands
Perodua: A local Malaysian brand, with sales of 31,808 units in November, accounting for nearly half of the market, with a market share of 44.3%.
Sales in November fell slightly by 5.7% compared to October, as consumers are waiting for year-end promotions, and sales are expected to rise significantly in December.
Proton: Proton's sales in November were 11,637 units, down 5.0% month-on-month, with a market share of 16.2%, ranking second in Malaysia after Perodua.
Although Geely acquired nearly half of Proton's share, as a local Malaysian brand, its product positioning and price overlap with Perodua, and its competitiveness is not as good as Perodua, with a significant gap in market share.
Chinese brands such as Chery, BYD, and Haval
Jaecoo: Sales in November were 1,456 units, down slightly from the previous month, accounting for 2.0% of the market share, ranking fifth in Malaysia.
Chery: In addition to Jaecoo, the Chery brand itself also entered the top ten with sales of 819 units. In addition, Chery Automobile's Omenda sales were 445 units, and Chery brand sales were 374 units.
BYD: Ranked ninth with sales of 783 units, and its Atto 3 and other models attracted the attention of consumers.
Haval: Haval sold 356 units in November, with sales increasing by 201.7% month-on-month, squeezing out Ford, which ranked 15th last month, and entered the list.
In addition, brands such as Xiaopeng, GAC Aion, Tank, and Leapmotor have low sales and have not yet opened up the Malaysian market.
In November, Chinese brands sold nearly 4,000 vehicles in Malaysia, taking about 5.5% of the market share.

Perodua and Proton monopolized the top five hot-selling models of the month. Among them, Perodua's Bezza, Axia and Myvi took the top three, with a total market share of 32.9%.
These three models are all small cars, which shows that cheap and fuel-efficient models are popular among consumers in the Malaysian market.
Japanese brands Toyota and Honda each have two models in the top ten sales.
Toyota attracts consumers with different needs with its popular small car Vios and durable pickup Hilux; while Honda consolidates its market position with its small and flexible urban car City and multi-functional SUV HR-V.
Jaecoo J7: J7 is the best-selling model among Chinese brands. It ranked 13th in November. It is still difficult to enter the top ten.
Chinese brands still need to steadily increase their market influence.
