2027 Hyundai Tucson Officially Revealed: Three Powertrain Options and Major Electrification Upgrades

October 4 News: Hyundai has officially revealed the new 2027 Hyundai Tucson, which continues to offer three powertrain options: gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid.

Although the new Tucson retains a conventional gasoline version, Hyundai has clearly shifted the focus of this generation toward electrification. The hybrid model receives a new crankshaft-integrated motor, while the plug-in hybrid version gets a more powerful electric motor and a larger battery.

The three versions are all based on a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, but each powertrain has a different focus.

Gasoline Version Keeps the Traditional Powertrain

The 2027 Tucson gasoline version continues to use a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 184 horsepower.

Unlike the hybrid models, the gasoline version does not use dual electric motors or a high-voltage battery. Its powertrain is therefore simpler and more conventional, providing an option for customers who still prefer a traditional gasoline SUV.

Hyundai has currently released the main specifications for the gasoline and hybrid versions in the U.S. market, while pricing has not yet been announced.

Hybrid Version Gets a New Crankshaft-Integrated Motor

The biggest technical change can be found in the hybrid system.

The 2027 Tucson Hybrid continues to use the 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, but Hyundai has added a new 17-horsepower, 13-kW motor directly connected to the crankshaft.

This compact motor replaces the conventional belt-driven starter-generator and performs several functions.

It can start the gasoline engine, provide additional power during acceleration, and recover energy during deceleration to recharge the high-voltage battery.

A second electric motor is positioned between the crankshaft-integrated motor and the six-speed automatic transmission. This is the main drive motor of the hybrid system, producing 64 horsepower, or 47.7 kW.

The system is paired with a 1.49-kWh, 270-volt high-voltage battery.

The two motors have different roles. The smaller crankshaft-integrated motor focuses on engine starting, power assistance, and energy recovery, while the larger drive motor handles most of the electric propulsion.

This layout allows Hyundai to better manage engine start-stop operation, low-speed power delivery, and regenerative braking.

233 Horsepower Hybrid System

The 2027 Tucson Hybrid delivers a combined 233 horsepower and 279.9 lb-ft of torque.

For comparison, the previous-generation Tucson Hybrid produced 231 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque.

The increase in horsepower is relatively small, but the improvement in torque is more noticeable.

Hyundai's focus is therefore not simply on increasing acceleration performance. The new motor is also designed to improve energy management and make the hybrid system operate more efficiently.

Fuel economy has also improved.

With 17-inch wheels, the front-wheel-drive version can achieve up to 42 mpg, while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at approximately 40-42 mpg.

The previous-generation models were rated at around 38 mpg for front-wheel drive and 36 mpg for all-wheel drive.

Plug-In Hybrid Version Gets More Power and a Larger Battery

The 2027 Tucson will also continue to offer a plug-in hybrid version.

The PHEV uses a similar 1.6-liter turbocharged engine and dual-motor layout, but its main electric motor has been upgraded to 106 horsepower, or 79 kW.

This represents an increase of 9 horsepower compared with the previous generation.

The complete plug-in hybrid system is expected to produce 288 horsepower, an increase of 20 horsepower over the previous model.

The battery has also been significantly upgraded.

Battery capacity increases from 13.8 kWh to 17.1 kWh.

According to current reports, the new Tucson Plug-In Hybrid is expected to offer approximately 50 miles of electric-only driving range on a full charge. However, this figure is still an estimate and is not the final certified range.

The larger battery should allow the PHEV to cover a longer distance using electric power alone, making it more suitable for daily urban commuting.

Stay Mode Allows the Cabin to Stay Powered

Another interesting feature of the new hybrid system is Stay Mode.

When the vehicle is stationary, the gasoline engine can be switched off while the vehicle continues to operate the air conditioning, heating, audio system, and other cabin functions.

This means the engine does not need to remain running simply to keep the cabin comfortable while the vehicle is parked.

The new Tucson also uses an integrated electric water pump across its powertrain lineup, helping improve the efficiency of the vehicle's thermal management system.

More Rugged Exterior Design

The exterior design has also been significantly updated.

Instead of continuing the previous generation's relatively complex styling, the 2027 Tucson adopts a more rugged and geometric design with stronger straight lines.

The vehicle looks larger and more substantial from the outside, although Hyundai has not yet released complete dimensions in the current announcement.

The Tucson remains a compact crossover SUV, but its new design gives it a stronger and more upright visual presence.

New Pleos Connect Infotainment System

The interior receives a major technology upgrade as well.

The 2027 Tucson adopts Hyundai's new Pleos Connect infotainment system, with available 12.9-inch and 17-inch center displays.

A 9.9-inch slim digital instrument display is also positioned in front of the driver.

The infotainment system is based on Android Automotive OS and incorporates Gleo AI, bringing more advanced digital interaction and intelligent vehicle functions into the cabin.

The exact equipment combinations for the different screen sizes have not yet been fully announced.

Three Powertrains for Different Customer Needs

Overall, the 2027 Hyundai Tucson is more than a simple facelift. Hyundai has upgraded the powertrain technology, interior technology, and exterior design to make the SUV more competitive in an increasingly electrified market.

The gasoline version retains the conventional 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with 184 horsepower.

The hybrid version adds a new crankshaft-integrated motor to improve engine starting, acceleration assistance, and energy recovery, while delivering 233 horsepower.

The plug-in hybrid version goes further with a more powerful 106-horsepower drive motor and a larger 17.1-kWh battery, bringing system output to 288 horsepower.

The three powertrains therefore have clearly different roles: the gasoline version provides a traditional driving option, the hybrid focuses on efficiency and energy management, while the plug-in hybrid offers stronger electric driving capability and a longer electric-only range.

The 2027 Hyundai Tucson gasoline and hybrid versions are expected to enter the U.S. market in early 2027, while the plug-in hybrid version is expected to arrive later.

It is important to note that this launch schedule applies to the U.S. market and should not be considered a confirmed launch schedule for China or other markets.

With its updated electrified powertrains, larger screens, AI-based infotainment, and more rugged exterior design, the 2027 Tucson shows Hyundai's continued transition from traditional gasoline SUVs toward more electrified and intelligent vehicles.
