Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. (GAC Group), founded in 1997 and headquartered in Guangzhou, China, is one of China’s leading automotive manufacturers. With the philosophy of “Innovation drives quality, quality builds GAC”, the company has built a complete automotive industrial chain that includes R&D, manufacturing, auto parts, finance, and mobility services. GAC is now among the most influential Chinese automotive groups globally.


1. Establishment and Early Development (1997–2005)

  • 1997: GAC Group was officially established, originating from the former Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group, focusing on passenger and commercial vehicles.

  • In its early stage, GAC built joint ventures with global automakers to gain advanced production and management experience.

  • 1998: The establishment of GAC Honda marked one of China’s most successful Sino-Japanese joint ventures, laying a strong foundation for the company’s growth.

  • 2004: GAC formed another key partnership, GAC Toyota, strengthening its presence in the mid-to-high-end sedan market.


2. Rise of Independent Brands and Industrial Expansion (2006–2012)

  • 2006: GAC launched its independent brand strategy, establishing GAC Motor Co., Ltd. to develop self-owned passenger cars.

  • 2010: The first independently developed sedan, the Trumpchi GA5, debuted, officially introducing the GAC Trumpchi brand.

  • Trumpchi quickly earned recognition for its quality, design, and safety, becoming a model for Chinese high-end independent brands.

  • 2012: GAC Group was successfully listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange (Stock Code: 601238), becoming one of China’s first state-owned automotive groups to go public.


3. Multi-Brand Growth and Global Cooperation (2013–2018)

  • 2013: GAC Trumpchi launched the GS5 SUV, a major success that boosted brand visibility and sales.

  • During this period, GAC expanded its network of joint ventures:

    • GAC FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) was established.

    • Strengthened partnerships with Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Hino, forming a diversified product portfolio.

  • 2015: GAC Trumpchi made its debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit — the first Chinese car brand to appear there.

  • 2017: The launch of the Trumpchi GS8, a premium SUV, further established GAC’s image as a top-tier Chinese automaker.


4. Transition to New Energy and Smart Technology (2018–2021)

  • 2018: GAC introduced its new energy vehicle brand — GAC Aion, focusing on pure electric and smart vehicles.

  • 2019: Models such as the Aion S and Aion LX entered the market, offering long range, high efficiency, and advanced intelligent systems.

  • 2020: The company launched the “e-TIME Action Plan”, promoting full electrification, connectivity, and digital transformation.

  • GAC also partnered with Huawei and CATL, accelerating innovation in autonomous driving, battery safety, and intelligent cockpit technologies.


5. Smart Electrification and Global Expansion (2022–Present)

  • 2022: GAC Aion became an independent high-end EV brand, focusing on intelligent electric mobility.

  • The brand launched several popular models, including Aion V Plus, Aion Y, and the Hyper SSR, expanding from mass-market EVs to high-performance luxury cars.

  • 2023: GAC introduced the Hyper (Haobo) brand, forming a dual-brand structure with Aion to strengthen its premium EV lineup.

  • GAC accelerated its globalization strategy, expanding sales and service networks across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

  • 2024 onward: GAC launched its “Smart-EV Integration Strategy”, integrating intelligent manufacturing, electrification, and software-driven vehicle development across its portfolio.

From joint ventures to independent innovation, GAC Group has become a symbol of China’s automotive evolution — from “technology import” to “global innovation.”
