Brand History:Changan

Changan Automobile, officially known as China Changan Automobile Group Co., Ltd., is one of China’s oldest and largest automotive manufacturers. Its origins date back to 1862 as a military machinery factory, while its modern automotive operations officially began in 1984. Headquartered in Chongqing, Changan is a pioneer in China’s automotive industry, producing commercial vehicles, passenger cars, new energy vehicles (NEVs), and smart connected vehicles.


1. Founding and Early Development (1862–1984)

  • 1862: The predecessor of Changan was the Changan Arsenal, primarily producing military equipment.

  • 1984: Changan formally entered the automobile manufacturing sector, focusing on microcars and commercial vehicles.

  • Early models, such as Changan microvans, served domestic markets and helped the company gain valuable automotive manufacturing experience.


2. Restructuring and Brand Establishment (1985–2000)

  • 1990s: Changan underwent modern restructuring, forming the Changan Automobile Group and establishing itself as an independent corporate entity.

3. Technological Innovation and Independent Brand Growth (2001–2010)

  • 2001: Changan established a dedicated R&D center, enhancing capabilities in engines, chassis, and complete vehicle design.

  • 2004: Launch of independently developed models such as Changan Benben and Changan Eado, gaining domestic market recognition for affordability and reliability.

  • 2006–2010: Expanded collaboration with Ford, Suzuki, and Mazda, integrating advanced technology while maintaining a focus on independent brand development.


4. New Energy and Intelligent Vehicle Development (2011–2020)

  • 2012: Changan entered the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector, producing electric microcars and hybrid vehicles.

  • 2015: Released a new passenger car platform, improving safety, comfort, and smart vehicle features.

  • 2016: Introduced the CS series SUVs (e.g., CS75, CS55), which became a key driver of brand sales.

  • 2018–2020: Launched Changan New Energy brand, offering EV, PHEV, and hybrid vehicles such as the Eado EV and Benben E-Star, accelerating the company’s transition toward green and intelligent mobility.


5. Global Expansion and Strategic Upgrade (2021–Present)

  • 2021: Introduced the Blue Whale engine series and advanced intelligent driving systems, accelerating electrification and smart vehicle development.

  • Expanded global footprint in Southeast Asia, South America, and Europe, establishing export and joint production networks.

  • 2022–2023: Released next-generation smart EVs and SUVs, including the Deep Blue SL03 and CS75 PLUS EV, solidifying Changan’s position in the intelligent electric vehicle market.

  • Changan focuses on new energy, intelligent technology, and globalization, aiming to become a leading global provider of green smart mobility solutions.
