The ignition coil is a key component in the ignition system of an automobile engine. Its main function is to convert low-voltage electricity into high-voltage electricity to ignite the spark plug, thereby realizing the ignition process.
The structure of the ignition coil

Iron core : It is made of stacked silicon steel sheets, the sheets are separated by insulating materials, and the outer layer is covered with an insulating sleeve to enhance the magnetic flux.

Winding :

Primary winding : Use enameled wire with a diameter of 0.5 to 1.0 mm to wind in layers, the number of turns is usually 230 to 370 turns, and it is located outside the secondary winding to facilitate heat dissipation.

Secondary winding : It is wound with enameled wire with a diameter of 0.06 to 0.10 mm, with a large number of turns (about 11,000 to 26,000 turns), usually located outside the primary winding.

Additional components : including bakelite covers, porcelain cups, insulating paper, asphalt or transformer oil, etc., used to enhance insulation and prevent moisture intrusion.

Open magnetic circuit ignition coil : uses a cylindrical iron core, has low conversion efficiency, but has a simple structure and is suitable for traditional ignition systems.

Closed magnetic circuit ignition coil : The iron core is in the shape of a "mouth" or a "sun", the magnetic lines of force are closed, the energy conversion efficiency is high, the size is small, the weight is light, and it is suitable for modern high-energy contactless ignition systems.

Classification by magnetic circuit structure :

Open magnetic circuit ignition coil : suitable for traditional contact ignition system, with simple structure and low cost, but large magnetic leakage and low efficiency.

Closed magnetic circuit ignition coil : suitable for modern electronically controlled ignition systems, with the advantages of high energy conversion efficiency, small size and light weight.
Classification by working method :

Independent ignition mode : Each cylinder is equipped with an ignition coil, which is suitable for multi-cylinder engines and can improve ignition efficiency and engine performance.

Simultaneous ignition mode : multiple cylinders share one ignition coil, which is suitable for engines with few cylinders, but the ignition efficiency is low.

Oil-immersed ignition coil : cooled by oil, suitable for traditional ignition systems, but with large magnetic leakage and low efficiency.
