Volkswagen's First "Real" Plug-in Hybrid Sedan Is Coming: Over 2,000 km Range and Urban NOA Technology
While Volkswagen has been involved in plug-in hybrid technology since the launch of the Golf GTE in 2014, its earlier PHEV models such as the Tiguan L PHEV and Passat PHEV were largely based on traditional combustion-engine platforms. As a result, they struggled to compete with rapidly advancing Chinese new energy vehicles in terms of electric range, fuel efficiency, and intelligent driving capabilities.

Now, Volkswagen appears ready to change the game.
Following the introduction of the range-extended SUV ID.ERA 9X, SAIC Volkswagen is preparing to launch the ID.ERA 5S, the brand's first dedicated plug-in hybrid sedan designed specifically for the new energy era. With a claimed combined range exceeding 2,000 km, ultra-low fuel consumption, and advanced Urban NOA (Navigate on Autopilot) functionality, the ID.ERA 5S could become one of Volkswagen's most important new models in recent years.
Designed Around an "Electric-First" Philosophy
Unlike traditional hybrid vehicles that rely primarily on gasoline power, the ID.ERA 5S adopts a more modern "electric-first" approach.
The vehicle is equipped with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine producing 80 kW, paired with a powerful 130 kW electric motor. This configuration clearly shows that electric propulsion takes priority, while the engine serves mainly as a range extender and supplementary power source.
This setup aligns closely with current consumer preferences, delivering a driving experience that feels much more like a pure electric vehicle.
According to regulatory filings, the ID.ERA 5S offers a CLTC pure-electric driving range of 160 km and a total combined range exceeding 2,000 km, making it suitable for both daily commuting and long-distance travel.
Although battery specifications have not yet been officially announced, industry analysts expect the vehicle to utilize a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack to help maintain competitive pricing.

Spacious A+ Segment Sedan
The ID.ERA 5S is positioned between the Volkswagen Lamando L and Passat in terms of size and market placement.
Vehicle dimensions include:
- Length: 4,836 mm
- Width: 1,880 mm
- Height: 1,505 mm
- Wheelbase: 2,766 mm
These measurements place the car firmly within the A+ sedan segment, offering more interior space than compact sedans while remaining more affordable than traditional midsize models.
Volkswagen has long been known for maximizing cabin space and practicality, and the ID.ERA 5S is expected to continue that tradition with a family-friendly interior and comfortable seating.
Industry estimates suggest a potential price range between RMB 120,000 and RMB 150,000, placing it directly against some of China's most popular plug-in hybrid sedans.

Extremely Low Fuel Consumption
One of the most impressive figures released so far is the vehicle's fuel efficiency.
SAIC Volkswagen claims that the ID.ERA 5S can achieve a fuel consumption rate of only 2.82 L/100 km under battery-depleted conditions.
This places the sedan among the most fuel-efficient plug-in hybrids currently available, helping drivers significantly reduce fuel costs during long-distance journeys when electric power is no longer available.
Combined with its 2,000 km-plus total range, the ID.ERA 5S promises exceptional efficiency and convenience for everyday use.

Volkswagen's First Sedan with Urban NOA
Perhaps the most significant advancement is the vehicle's intelligent driving capability.
The ID.ERA 5S will become Volkswagen's first sedan equipped with the brand's new intelligent driving system featuring the recognizable blue autonomous driving indicator light.
The system is expected to include:
- Horizon Journey intelligent driving chipset
- End-to-end AI large model architecture
- HSD intelligent driving algorithms
- Vision-based sensor fusion technology
Unlike some earlier systems, it does not rely on high-definition maps and can support Urban NOA functionality in city environments.
Additional intelligent driving features include:
- Highway NOA
- Intelligent lane changing
- Traffic signal recognition
- Automated parking assistance
- Memory parking functions
In the current A-segment plug-in hybrid market, most competitors only offer highway navigation assistance and parking features. Urban NOA remains relatively rare, giving the ID.ERA 5S a potentially significant competitive advantage.
