New Hyundai Tucson Starts at Around $22,000! All-New SUV Offers an 8-Speed Automatic and 9 Airbags

Hyundai has officially opened pre-orders for the fifth-generation Tucson in South Korea and announced the new model's specifications and prices. After six years, the Tucson has finally received a full generational update rather than a simple facelift.

The new SUV brings improvements to its exterior design, interior technology, body dimensions, powertrain, and safety equipment. The gasoline version starts at approximately RMB 158,000, while the hybrid version starts at around RMB 182,000.

The first-day response was impressive. Hyundai received 15,045 pre-orders, exceeding the previous generation's 10,842 orders and setting a new first-day record for the Tucson series.

The order structure is also worth noting. Hybrid models accounted for 55% of total pre-orders, up from 48% for the previous generation. The top-spec Inspiration trim represented 44%, compared with 29% previously. Meanwhile, the adventure-inspired XRT version accounted for only 1%.

These figures suggest that South Korean customers are increasingly interested in fuel efficiency, comfort, and higher equipment levels. For Hyundai, the new Tucson is not only designed to attract existing owners but also to win more family SUV buyers.

1. A Bolder Exterior with a More Muscular Design

The fifth-generation Tucson adopts Hyundai's new “Art of Steel” design language, giving the SUV a more angular appearance and a stronger visual presence.

The front end features a clamshell-style hood, H-Edge daytime running lights, and a horizontal light strip. Three-dimensional wheel arches and distinctive Prism-style rear lights further enhance its appearance.

For customers who prefer a more rugged look, the XRT version offers a dedicated grille, special wheel-arch trim, and front and rear protective elements. These details give the SUV a stronger outdoor and adventure-oriented character.

However, the XRT's low pre-order share suggests that most customers still prefer conventional versions designed for everyday driving and family use.

2. A More Modern Interior with 9 Airbags as Standard

The interior is another important area of improvement.

The new Tucson features a layered, floating-style dashboard, a slim instrument display, and a dual-D-shaped steering wheel. The center console includes an armrest-style support area and concealed storage compartments, combining a modern appearance with everyday practicality.

The vehicle is equipped with Hyundai's Pleos Connect infotainment system. Depending on the trim level, customers can choose a 12.9-inch or 17-inch central touchscreen. The system also supports app installation, providing a more connected driving experience.

Safety equipment is another highlight. Even the entry-level model comes with nine airbags, including a front-center airbag and side airbags.

For a compact SUV designed primarily for families, this level of standard safety equipment adds considerable value and makes the entry-level version more competitive.

3. Larger Dimensions and a More Practical Interior

The new Tucson measures 4,700 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width, and 1,685 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,785 mm.

Compared with the previous generation, the new model is 60 mm longer, 40 mm wider, and 20 mm taller. Its wheelbase has also increased by 30 mm.

Although these changes are relatively modest, they help improve the vehicle's overall proportions and provide opportunities for better passenger comfort.

One particularly practical improvement is the rear-door opening angle, which has increased from 73 degrees to 83 degrees. This makes getting in and out easier, especially for families with children.

The luggage compartment offers a capacity of 645 liters, providing plenty of room for shopping, suitcases, and family travel essentials.

These updates may not seem revolutionary, but they address practical needs that matter to everyday SUV owners.

4. The 1.6T Gasoline Engine Gets an 8-Speed Automatic

The powertrain is one of the most important upgrades in the new Tucson.

The gasoline version uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine producing 193 horsepower and 265 Nm of torque.

One major change is the transmission. The previous 7-speed dual-clutch transmission has been replaced by an 8-speed automatic transmission.

This change may improve driving smoothness and overall comfort, particularly in everyday traffic conditions. It also addresses one of the areas where buyers may have wanted further refinement.

The hybrid version combines a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined system output of 245 horsepower. It uses a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Unlike a plug-in hybrid, this system cannot be charged externally. The battery is charged through the vehicle's hybrid system and regenerative braking.

According to the announced figures, the front-wheel-drive hybrid model with 17-inch wheels achieves fuel economy of approximately 17.4 km/L, equivalent to about 5.75 L/100 km.

This represents an improvement over the previous generation and makes the hybrid version attractive to customers who want better fuel economy without the need to plug in the vehicle.

Overall, the gasoline version focuses on conventional driving performance, while the hybrid model aims to balance power and fuel efficiency.

5. Improved Driver Assistance and Body Safety

The new Tucson also receives updates to its driver assistance systems and body structure.

Available features include highway driving assistance, navigation-based smart cruise control, front and rear parking collision prevention, a surround-view transparent-view system, and protection against unintended accelerator pedal operation.

These systems are designed to assist drivers during highway journeys, parking, and everyday driving. However, the availability of individual functions depends on the trim level and market.

Hyundai has also increased the proportion of ultra-high-strength steel in the body structure to 58%. Reinforcements have been added to the front suspension mounting areas and rear suspension support sections.

In addition, the use of acoustic glass and sound-absorbing materials has been expanded to help reduce cabin noise.

Rather than focusing entirely on large screens or advanced digital features, Hyundai has also worked on structural strength, noise insulation, and overall driving comfort.

6. South Korean Prices: The Hybrid Starts at Around RMB 182,000

The new Tucson is available in eight configurations in South Korea, covering two powertrain options and four trim levels.

  • Gasoline version: Approximately KRW 31.4 million–37.9 million, equivalent to RMB 158,000–190,000.

  • Hybrid version: Approximately KRW 36.15 million–42.7 million, equivalent to RMB 182,000–215,000.

These are indicative currency conversions based on the announced South Korean prices. The hybrid prices include applicable local tax benefits, and actual prices may vary depending on exchange rates, taxes, and market conditions.

The gasoline version is aimed at customers who prioritize the initial purchase price, while the hybrid version targets buyers who value fuel efficiency, performance, and lower day-to-day running costs.

Judging by the pre-order figures, hybrid models and higher-spec trims are likely to play an important role in the new Tucson's sales performance.

7. Can the New Tucson Challenge the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4?

The compact SUV segment is highly competitive, with the Hyundai Tucson facing established rivals such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

Both Japanese models have built strong reputations in hybrid technology, market acceptance, and resale value. To gain a larger market share, Hyundai needs to offer more than a refreshed exterior.

The new Tucson takes a comprehensive approach. The gasoline version receives an 8-speed automatic transmission, the hybrid version improves fuel efficiency, the body becomes larger, and safety equipment and sound insulation are upgraded.

The record-breaking first-day pre-order figure indicates strong initial interest. However, pre-orders alone do not guarantee long-term sales success.

Actual deliveries, real-world fuel consumption, long-term reliability, and customer feedback will ultimately determine whether the new Tucson can maintain its momentum.

Final Thoughts

The fifth-generation Hyundai Tucson represents a comprehensive product upgrade focused on practicality rather than revolutionary technology.

Its key improvements include a new 8-speed automatic transmission for the gasoline version, a 245-horsepower hybrid system, a larger body, nine standard airbags, and better cabin noise insulation.

For buyers who prioritize fuel economy, family practicality, and safety equipment, the hybrid version is worth considering. Customers who prefer a lower purchase price and conventional powertrain can choose the gasoline version.

The next challenge for Hyundai is to turn strong pre-order demand into sustained sales and prove that the new Tucson can compete more effectively with the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

For the global automotive market, the new Tucson also demonstrates how established manufacturers are continuing to refine conventional and hybrid SUVs to meet changing customer expectations.
