According to Europa Press and Expansión media reports this week, SAIC is considering building its first electric vehicle factory in Europe in Spain to produce MG cars to be sold in various markets in the region. SAIC is currently in consultation with the Spanish Ministry of Industry.
The report pointed out that SAIC will make a decision before September 30, and the new factory is scheduled to roll off the first car in the fourth quarter of 2027. In addition to Spain, SAIC is also considering building factories in Hungary or the Czech Republic because of lower labor costs in these places.
At the same time, SAIC also specifically mentioned that it will establish a network of nearly 100 comprehensive service points covering the whole of Spain, and set up a logistics hub in Barcelona to manage MG's operations throughout southern Europe.
In addition, SAIC emphasized that in less than 40 months, it has directly created more than 500 jobs in Spain and more than 1,000 indirect jobs related to its business.
On the one hand, one of Spain's advantages is that it is closer to the UK and has more convenient sea transportation connections, and the UK happens to be SAIC's most important market overseas. On the other hand, Spain itself is also one of SAIC's key markets in Europe.
In fact, the MG brand chose to set up a factory in Europe to avoid tariffs imposed on Chinese electric vehicles entering the EU market. At present, SAIC has requested to discuss with the European Commission the tariffs applicable to "specific circumstances" - SAIC was subject to the maximum tariff of 38% by the EU.
Undoubtedly, SAIC's localization in Europe will greatly change the current production pattern of electric vehicles in Europe and will accelerate the electrification of Europe.
