Geely Galaxy M8: A New 5-Seat Plug-in Hybrid SUV Set to Challenge the 20,000-Dollar Market

Large 5-Seat Layout with More Practical Space
The Geely Galaxy M8 largely continues the design language of the Galaxy M9, featuring a sleek front-end design, a full-width light strip, an active air intake grille and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor.
The vehicle measures approximately 5,205 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width and 1,800 mm in height, with a 3,030 mm wheelbase. These dimensions give the M8 a substantial presence comparable to larger premium SUVs.
The biggest difference from the Galaxy M9 is the seating configuration.
While the M9 offers six seats, the M8 is designed as a five-seat SUV. By eliminating the third row, Geely can allocate more interior space to the second row and luggage compartment.
For families that normally travel with four or five people, this configuration can provide better rear-seat comfort and a more useful trunk. Daily items such as luggage, baby strollers, camping equipment and bicycles can be accommodated more easily.
The M8 is also expected to feature 20-inch wheels with 255/50 R20 tires, while higher-specification versions may upgrade to 21-inch wheels with 265/45 R21 tires.

53.42 kWh Battery and Long Electric Range
The powertrain is another major highlight of the Galaxy M8.
The SUV is expected to use a 1.5T plug-in hybrid system, combining a gasoline engine with electric motors. The engine reportedly delivers a maximum power of approximately 120 kW.
Different versions are expected to include both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations. The two-wheel-drive model is expected to deliver around 180 kW, while the high-performance four-wheel-drive version could reach approximately 520 kW.
The M8's most important advantage, however, is its battery.
It is equipped with a 53.42 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by CATL, with the battery pack developed by Geely. Depending on the configuration, the vehicle is expected to achieve approximately 231–251 km of WLTC pure electric range, while the CLTC range could exceed 300 km.
For daily urban commuting, this is a significant advantage.
For many users, most daily journeys can be completed using electric power alone. With home charging available, the M8 can effectively operate like an electric SUV during the week while retaining the flexibility of a gasoline engine for long-distance travel.

Standard LiDAR and Advanced Intelligent Driving
The Galaxy M8 also aims to bring advanced intelligent driving technology into a more affordable price segment.
The vehicle's declaration images show a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, and current reports indicate that the M8 may offer LiDAR-based intelligent driving technology as standard equipment.
The vehicle is expected to use Geely's Horizon Super Drive H7 intelligent driving system, reportedly featuring a computing platform with up to 700 TOPS of computing power and approximately 31 perception components throughout the vehicle.
Potential functions include:
-
High-speed and urban intelligent driving assistance
-
Intelligent avoidance of pedestrians and vehicles
-
Automatic parking and vehicle retrieval
-
Cross-floor automatic exit
-
Automatic toll gate passage
-
Advanced navigation-assisted driving
If LiDAR and high-performance intelligent driving hardware are indeed offered across the range, the Galaxy M8 could become a strong competitor in the mid-range new energy SUV market.
Of course, hardware specifications do not necessarily determine the actual intelligent driving experience. The real performance of urban NOA, automatic lane changing and complex road handling will ultimately depend on software optimization and future OTA updates.

Competitive Pricing Could Be the Biggest Advantage
Pricing will be one of the most important factors determining the success of the Galaxy M8.
The current Galaxy M9 has already entered a highly competitive price range in China, while industry forecasts suggest that the Galaxy M8 could start at around RMB 150,000–160,000.
If this pricing becomes reality, the M8 could offer an unusual combination of:
-
Over 5.2-meter body length
-
3,030 mm wheelbase
-
Five-seat large SUV layout
-
53.42 kWh battery
-
Long pure electric range
-
Plug-in hybrid flexibility
-
LiDAR-based intelligent driving
-
High-performance four-wheel-drive option
This combination could make the M8 particularly attractive to families looking for a large SUV without paying premium-brand prices.
Galaxy M8 vs. Galaxy M9
Interestingly, the biggest competitor to the M8 may actually be Geely's own Galaxy M9.
The two models target slightly different customer requirements.
The Galaxy M9 is more suitable for families that frequently need six seats and regularly travel with more passengers.
The Galaxy M8, on the other hand, focuses on customers who prioritize five-seat comfort, luggage space, electric range and intelligent driving.
In simple terms, the M8 removes the third row and uses the saved space and weight to improve the areas that most five-person families use every day.
A Strong New Player in China's New Energy SUV Market
The Geely Galaxy M8 reflects an important change in the Chinese SUV market.
