BYD, China's No. 1 electric car company, is accelerating its global expansion. BYD recently launched the 7-seater electric MPV M6 at the 31st Indonesia International Motor Show in Indonesia.
According to China Auto News, the BYD M6, unveiled at the Indonesian Auto Show on the 20th, is Indonesia's first electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). It is expected to meet the growing demand for EVs. There are many large families in Indonesia, and 7-seater MPVs are very popular.
The M6 measures 4710mm long, 1810mm wide and 1690mm high, similar to the best-selling MPV in Indonesia, the Toyota Innova (4735mm X1830mm X1795mm). The M6 is available in three trims. Standard 7-seater, Super 7-seater, Super 6-seater.
Prices start at $23,400 (about RMB 170,000). The price of the highest configuration is $26,500 (about RMB 192,700). The battery is 55.4 kWh basic and the long-range is equipped with a 71.8 kWh BYD blade battery. It provides a driving range of up to 420 km and 530 km respectively (based on European NEDC). With 115kW fast charging, the BYD M6 can be charged from 10% to 80% in 40 minutes.
The M6 body is based on the existing hybrid MPV Song Max, and a similar design can be seen overall. The difference is that the M6 includes modern design elements such as ultra-thin LED headlights, a closed grille and a large BYD logo on the front. The interior is equipped with BYD's latest technology and software, including a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment display that supports Apple CarPlay.
The Indonesian government has announced ambitious plans to sell about 50,000 electric sedans this year. Data from the Indonesian Automotive Association shows that electric vehicle sales in 2023 will be 17,501, a year-on-year increase of 70%. It is expected to at least double this year.
Last year alone, Hyundai Motor and China's GM Wuling electric vehicles accounted for most of the entire EV market. This year, BYD and other Chinese electric vehicle companies have entered the Indonesian electric MPV market. BYD will start producing EVs at a local factory in Indonesia in 2026. A total investment of US$1.3 billion will produce 150,000 EVs per year.
BYD has already taken the first place in the Indonesian market for electric vehicles, including the electric small hatchback Dolphin and the small SUV Atto3. This year, as BYD expands its global business, new cars such as Denza and Yangwang, high-end electric vehicles, have appeared in global markets such as Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia.
Although BYD became the world's largest electric vehicle company in the first quarter of this year, experts predict that although it will temporarily lag behind Tesla in the second quarter, BYD will occupy the first place in pure electric vehicle sales this year.
