BYD Shark vs. Ford Ranger PHEV by Asiautos Auto Parts( vehicles Aftermarket Parts Expert)

BYD Shark vs. Ford Ranger PHEV by Asiautos Auto Parts( vehicles Aftermarket Parts Expert)

As of 2024, the trend of new energy pickups has received widespread attention worldwide. Both BYD, a major new energy vehicle manufacturer, and Ford, a giant in the pickup field, have made deep layouts in this area. For plug-in hybrid pickups, both automakers have launched BYD Shark and Ford Ranger PHEV models. BYD Shark has been launched in the Mexican market and will enter Australia, South Africa and other major pickup consumer countries in the future. Ford Ranger PHEV is also expected to be launched globally early next year. These two pickups can be said to be tit-for-tat in the overseas market, but in fact, the two have taken two completely different technical routes.

Power system-BYD Shark

First, let's look at the BYD Shark pickup. The car is built on the DMO platform and uses a 1.5T engine + front and rear dual motors to form a drive system. The front motor has a power of 170kW, the rear motor has a power of 150kW, and the combined torque is 650N·m. With the advantages of large torque and linear output of the motor, the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h is only 5.7 seconds, which exceeds most pickup models on the market. And the car uses continuously variable transmission and is not equipped with a traditional gearbox. It should be noted that the BYD Shark pickup is not equipped with a drive shaft, which is what we often call front and rear decoupled electric four-wheel drive. When the engine is needed to directly drive the wheels to work, the power cannot be transmitted to the rear axle, and the top speed is about 160km/h.

Power system-Ford Ranger PHEV

Compared with BYD Shark, the engine plays a more important role in the power system of Ford Ranger PHEV. It is equipped with a 2.3T ecoboost gasoline engine + 75kW P2 motor, and the comprehensive torque can reach 690N·m. And it adopts a traditional pickup layout with a drive shaft, which can be understood as the motor mainly plays an auxiliary role. In terms of transmission system, Ranger PHEV is equipped with a 10AT gearbox.

Power system-comments

Although both cars are plug-in hybrid pickups, their technical routes are completely different, and they both play their core advantages. BYD's advantage lies in its electrification technology reserves, so the Shark pickup is mainly driven by motors, and the engine is more significant in replenishing batteries. Ford is an industry leader in internal combustion engines, and its motors mainly play an auxiliary role. For daily use, both have their own advantages. BYD Shark's advantage is that it has a better road driving experience, and there will be no frustration with the continuously variable transmission, and the acceleration experience will be better; Ford Ranger PHEV can have more advantages in off-road scenarios such as climbing and getting out of trouble.

Endurance-BYD Shark

The BYD Shark pickup is equipped with a 29.6-degree battery pack, which brings it a pure electric range of 100km, which has certain advantages for a plug-in hybrid pickup, allowing it to further reduce the cost of using the car. And when BYD Shark uses hybrid driving, the comprehensive range can reach 800km. It should be noted that BYD Shark also supports DC fast charging, which can be charged from 20% to 80% in 30 minutes. It also supports kinetic energy recovery, and can even do reverse energy replenishment on long downhill sections.

Endurance - Ford Ranger PHEV

Compared to BYD Shark, Ford Ranger's pure electric endurance is slightly inferior. Its 11.8-degree battery pack can only provide 45km of pure electric endurance and does not support DC fast charging. However, according to Ford's official survey data, 48% of Ranger users drive less than 40km a day, so the 45km pure electric endurance can also cover most commuting scenarios, and also supports kinetic energy recovery. The maximum endurance of Ford Ranger PHEV has not yet been announced, but it is believed that it can also reach 800km. Therefore, in terms of pure electric endurance, which is the key of plug-in hybrid models, Ford Ranger PHEV is not as good as BYD Shark.

Body and load-bearing - BYD Shark

BYD Shark has a body size of 5457x1971x1925mm and a wheelbase of 3260mm, which is a medium-to-large pickup truck. With its wide body, BYD Shark has excellent ride comfort. Its rear seat backrest angle can reach 27 degrees, and the legroom can reach 880.4mm, which has excellent rear seat ride comfort among pickup trucks. In terms of carrying capacity, BYD Shark can reach a payload of 853kg, which is excellent in the domestic pickup truck calibration, but it is limited by the front and rear double wishbone independent suspension, and its ultimate load capacity is not as good as that of traditional leaf spring rear suspension pickup trucks. In terms of traction capacity, BYD Shark supports 2.5 tons of traction qualification, which is average in the same class.

.

Body and load-carrying-Ford Ranger PHEV

Ford Ranger has always adhered to the standard medium-sized pickup truck size. The PHEV version is expected to be 5370x1918x1880mm and the wheelbase is 3270mm. The interior riding space is likely to be less than BYD Shark. However, Ford Ranger PHEV still has a clear advantage in carrying capacity. Its payload reaches 1 ton, and the key is that its traction capacity can reach 3.5 tons, which is significantly ahead of BYD Shark. For the Australian market, towing capacity is crucial. Many people are used to towing RVs or motorboats for travel. Ford Ranger PHEV has product advantages in this regard.

Interior-BYD Shark

In terms of interior design, BYD Shark and Formula Leopard 5 adopt the same design language. The large-size LCD instrument panel and the central control screen undertake most of the vehicle setting functions, and some physical buttons are reserved on the central armrest to control the hybrid mode, air conditioning switch and other settings. The overall sense of technology and luxury.

Interior-Ford Ranger PHEV

From the pictures disclosed so far, Ford Ranger PHEV continues the interior design language of the current Ford Ranger. The vertical central control screen and the physical buttons below undertake most of the vehicle setting functions, and the drive mode switch is still placed on the central armrest. Overall, the interior design of Ford Ranger PHEV is more traditional, more concise and capable, and both have their own advantages.

In conclusion: In overseas media reports, BYD Shark and Ford Ranger PHEV are often regarded as competitors. From the product information we can get now, the two adopt two completely different technical routes, and each has its own advantages. BYD Shark's advantage is that it has a stronger acceleration ability in the initial stage of highway driving and has a better highway driving experience, and its pure electric range is longer and the interior space is larger; Ford Ranger PHEV's advantage is that the engine displacement is larger, the power reserve in the later stage is more sufficient, and the load and towing capacity is better. In addition, both cars can realize the external discharge function, and are very suitable for outdoor use, so in the subsequent selection process, you can buy according to your own needs and model preferences. We also look forward to the early listing of the two cars in the domestic market.
