MG4

MG Brand History Overview

Origins and Early Years (1920s – Pre-WWII)

  • MG stands for Morris Garages, originally a sales and modification arm of Morris cars in Oxford, England.

  • The MG octagon badge was officially registered in 1924.

  • The first MG model, the MG 14/28, debuted in 1924 and quickly gained attention for its sporty and agile performance.

  • MG became synonymous with small, affordable British sports cars.

Golden Age (1930s – 1960s)

  • During the 1930s, MG focused on compact, lightweight sports cars like the M-Type and T-Series, which built the brand’s global reputation.

  • After World War II, MG continued to thrive with export success — particularly in North America.

  • By the 1960s, MG was one of Britain’s most famous car brands, even though the wider British auto industry began to face financial and structural challenges.

Ownership Changes and Decline (1970s – 2000s)

  • MG became part of several larger corporate groups over the decades, including the British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC).

  • By the early 2000s, the brand was under the MG Rover Group, which went bankrupt in 2005.

  • Later that year, Nanjing Automobile Corporation (China) acquired MG’s assets and trademarks.

  • In 2007, SAIC Motor Corporation Limited (Shanghai Automotive) took over Nanjing Auto and fully integrated MG into its global portfolio.

Modern Era: Chinese Ownership and Global Revival (2010s – Present)

  • Under SAIC, MG was reinvented as an international British-Chinese brand, combining heritage design with modern technology.

  • Instead of traditional roadsters, MG began focusing on value-for-money sedans, SUVs, and EVs.

  • MG’s manufacturing expanded to China, Thailand, and India, while sales grew rapidly in Europe, Australia, and South America.

  • The brand’s modern tagline revolves around affordable innovation and electrification.

MG4 Electric Model History

Introduction

  • It was first unveiled in China in June 2022, marketed globally later that year as MG 4 EV.

  • The MG4 represents MG’s most significant step into next-generation EVs.

Platform and Technology

  • Built on SAIC’s Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), which supports various battery sizes and drive configurations.

  • Available in multiple versions — rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) — with different power outputs and ranges.

  • The design focuses on dynamic handling, modern tech, and strong value compared to European and Korean rivals.

Market Performance

  • In China, the MG4 (MG Mulan) received moderate sales due to intense EV competition, leading to a refreshed global version launched in March 2025.

  • In Europe, it became one of MG’s most successful EVs, praised for affordability and practicality — often compared with models like the VW ID.3 and Renault Mégane E-Tech.

  • In Australia, MG4 EV serves as a key entry for MG into the growing electric vehicle market, alongside MG ZS EV.

Significance

  • The MG4 is widely viewed as a milestone model — transforming MG from a heritage sports-car nameplate into a mainstream global EV contender.

  • It bridges British design roots and Chinese engineering strength, showcasing MG’s modern direction under SAIC.
